A dept in a international company want to change our starting times as some people in the dept will never stay to cover regular duties. Within this dept there are three small groups (20 people in each group). Two of these groups do need to change their starting/finishing times for business needs. One group ( this group is in a different building to the other groups) have always started at 07.00 and leave between 15.00 and 15.30 depending on whether they have 30mins or 1 hour lunch. This group is flexible and will stay longer if needed but this is not a regular occurance. There is no need to change this groups starting times as it does not affect the business needs. The management want to penalise everyone in the dept because of a few people in the other groups who will not be flexible. Can they change our starting/finishing times?
Well, it depends on a number of things, particularly including the relevant contracts of employment.
But in essence, if a business wants to change the way that its workforce is organised (including hours of work) for a sound business reason (regardless of whether you agree with that reason), there is generally a way that the employer can do that.... even if it ultimately leads to dismissing and re-engaging the workers.
